New Historical Marker at the Taylors Mill and Primary Season Updates

It's hard to believe it's already July. It's been a busy summer so far, and today I'm going to share a few quick updates about what's going on in our community.

First, Taylors TownSquare was excited to join Mike and Nannette Iatesta (Mike is on Taylors TownSquare's Board of Directors as well) in dedicating a new Historical Marker at the entrance to the Taylors Mill area. The new marker tells the history of the Southern Bleachery Mill Village on one side and the story of the Superintendent House and 'Boss Hill' on the other. The sign was sponsored by Taylors TownSquare and funded by a collaboration between Taylors TownSquare, Michael and Nannette Iatesta, and the Taylors Mill.

You can see the coverage of it in the Greenville Journal.

Second, we've made it through most of the Primary season. Several big shake-ups are now pending in the makeup of the Greenville County Council. Coming in January 2023, there will likely be four new members of the Greenville County Council.

  • In the District 17 Republican Primary, Josey Russo defeated longtime incumbent Joe Dill. As of this writing, Dill is pursuing a challenge that has resulted in the Greenville County GOP overturning the result, followed by the SCGOP overturning that reversal. You can see recent reporting about this here (this is still a developing story, so our apologies if the information has already changed). The primary winner will face Democrat Sheryl Guerniero in the general election.

  • The District 19 Republican Primary had a run-off on June 28 following the June 14 primary. In the run-off, Benton Blount defeated current Council Chairman Willis Meadows, setting the stage for a significant leadership shakeup on the council next year. There is currently no opposition for Blount in the November general election.

  • In the District 23 Democratic Primary, Alan Mitchell won the race to fill the seat of retiring Chariman Pro Tem Xanthene Norris. Mitchell will face Republican Ben Carper in the November general election.

  • In the Distric 26 Republican Primary, Rick Bradley defeated incumbent Lynn Ballard. Since there are no other registered candidates, Bradley has likely won the District 26 seat.

You can find more information fromThe Post and CourierandThe Greenville News. With these results, a full third of Greenville County Council will be new in January 2023. Greenville County is changing, and we're here to keep you updated as these leaders make decisions that affect Taylors and all of Greenville County.

Thanks for reading, and we're excited to continue making Taylors a place you can belong in 2022 and beyond!
