How Do You Figure Out Who Owns Things?

Hey friends,

I hope you are well! Continuing in our series of helping you better understand how government works and giving you tools to figure things out, one common question I hear a lot is, "how do I figure out who owns this house?" It can seem daunting to figure things out, but fortunately, Greenville County has excellent tools to help.

All property information in Greenville County (and pretty much everywhere in South Carolina) is a matter of public record. It can feel daunting to sit and dig through property records, but these days, governments make this information graphically available through geographic information system (GIS) applications.

Greenville County makes its GIS data available online for free at https://www.gcgis.org/You can select the Advanced Internet Mapping System and zoom in and identify property to find essential information on that website. You can also see maps of political districts for voting, school information, and more. The User Guide is located here:

Whatever you're doing or working to find, GIS can be a beneficial tool to help figure out who owns a particular piece of property and how to work towards getting in contact with them.
