A Spin Through Time: Roller Sports on Taylors’ Main Street

As Taylors TownSquare reflects on its mission to foster belonging in our community, we’re reminded that a place’s identity is shaped by the institutions that call it home. These pillars anchor us in history, from churches to schools, businesses to nonprofits, while charting paths toward a shared future. Throughout 2025, we’ll dive into the stories of these institutions, exploring how they contribute to the tapestry of life in Taylors. Today, we look at a beloved Main Street institution: Roller Sports Skating Rink.

Nestled at 328 West Main Street in Taylors, Roller Sports Skating Rink has been a steadfast cornerstone of our community since it opened its doors in August 1969. For over fifty years, it has remained a place where generations of families and friends have created cherished memories while gliding across its well-worn wooden floor.

When you step into Roller Sports, you immediately feel a wave of nostalgia. The burgundy carpeted walls, the retro snack bar, and the echo of wheels on the rink evoke a sense of timelessness. Known initially as Wade Hampton Roller Rink, the venue became synonymous with the vibrant skate culture of the 1970s and 1980s. Today, Old School Skate Nights continue to celebrate that era, inviting skaters of all ages to relive the golden days of disco and neon lights.

In 2009, Chris Bellinger and his wife, Allison, took over ownership of Roller Sports. The couple’s commitment to preserving the rink's legacy while adapting to modern needs has kept it thriving. Their passion is evident in the various events they host, including Homeschool Skate sessions, which take place every third Friday from September through May. These events cater to a broad spectrum of the Taylors community, offering a safe and inclusive environment for children and families.

Over the decades, Roller Sports has been more than just a skating rink. It’s a place where people in Taylors have gathered for generations. It reminds us of a time past, but it’s also a place where new generations can gather and have fun. While some institutions have prominent brick facades and columns, some have burgundy carpets and give us space to do a little dance. Whether it’s birthday parties, school outings, or just a Saturday night skate, the rink is a hub for connection and joy.

As we look to the future, Roller Sports remains an essential part of Taylors’ Main Street. So the next time you’re nearby, take a moment to step inside, grab a pair of skates, and join the generations who have experienced the joy of this beloved institution.
